Once there, you can catch a flight to Belize City, but unfortunately, there are no direct options.

This means you’ll have to make stopovers, and with multiple flights, prices do add up A LOT.

Since this is seriously such a hassle, it isn’t an option I’d personally recommend. However, if you stay for more than 7 days, you’ll need a tourist permit called an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple).

Now, what many don’t realise is that it’s typically included in your airfare or paid when you enter Mexico at the land border.

However, if it’s not included, you must pay approximately $46.90 / 861 MXN when exiting Mexico.

In typical fashion, it’s common that border staff will charge you again for the FMM fee when you leave. Obviously, to talk your way out of it, you’ll need proof!

To check if your flight included this tax, have a look at your airline receipt for any mention of the Mexico Tourism Tax or “UK Departure Tax” (code: UK).

If your receipt isn’t clear, contact your airline to confirm whether the tax is included.

Some airlines issue an exemption letter confirming that the tax was included in your ticket fare. Present this to the immigration officer to avoid paying again.

If you arrived in Mexico at the land border, hold onto your receipt to prove you paid the fee at the start of your trip. Unfortunately, without it, the immigration officer will likely force you to pay again.

Personally, I printed out my airline receipt, which showed that the departure tax ‘UK’ was included in my ticket. Once the border official saw this, she quickly changed the subject and moved on with processing my passport.

Digital copies, such as on your phone, may not be accepted. Luckily, if you are from the USA, Canada, the EU, and plenty more countries (including Kiwis and Aussies), you can enter Belize visa-free for up to 30 days.

On arrival, you’ll need to fill out an immigration and customs form before your passport is officially stamped. Just remember to bring a pen along for this, as there’s nothing worse than being THAT person.

Seriously, immigration here is super straightforward, and the locals are always pretty damn chill, from my experience.

enjoying that belize sunshine

relaxing on a pier over the blue waters in belize

Caye Caulker Travel Tips

So now you know how to get to Caye Caulker, let’s get into all the info you may want to know for when you arrive.

Where To Stay In Caye Caulker

Now there are plenty of accommodation options on the island.
