It has been my favorite time to visit due to some of these reasons:

Ideal Weather Conditions Dry Season: April falls within the dry season (February to May), offering sunny and warm days perfect for outdoor activities. Daytime temperatures average between 75°F to 85°F / 24°C to 29°C, making it ideal for exploring, beach outings, and more.

Easter Celebrations & Local Traditions: Easter is a significant holiday in Belize, and many towns celebrate with lively parades, cultural events, and religious processions. A highlight includes the San Ignacio Fiesta with its grand parade, live music, and cultural festivities.

Whale Shark Diving: April is the peak season for encountering whale sharks at Gladden Spit Marine Reserve. However, friends of mine who tried to find the elusive whale sharks had 0 luck, so it’s not definite!

Marine Adventures Diving and Snorkeling: The calm seas make April a fantastic time for diving at the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will have great visibility and less strong currents which will make more a superb experience.

Fewer Crowds and Competitive Pricing: April marks the beginning of the shoulder season, leading to fewer tourists compared to the peak winter months. Travelers can often find more competitive rates for accommodations and tours due to lower demand.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1067" height="800" src="https://www.backpackerswanderlust.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/belize-in-april-1-1067x800.webp" alt="Captured from a first-person perspective, this image features the bare legs of a person sitting at the end of a wooden dock, extending their feet towards the vibrant, clear turquoise waters. This period is characterized by minimal rainfall and sunny days, making it an optimal time for beach and water-related activities.

The sea temperatures are warm and inviting, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving around the spectacular Belize Barrier Reef and other coastal areas. Visitors can enjoy extended periods outdoors without the frequent interruptions of rain typical of later months.

While April is generally drier and more predictable in terms of weather, it’s always wise for visitors to stay informed about daily weather forecasts. Occasional showers can occur, and being prepared can help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience during outdoor adventures.

Belize Temperatures In April

Belize in April has fantastic weather conditions, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking warm and pleasant climates. Daytime temperatures typically range between 80°F and 88°F / 27°C to 31°C, while nights are cooler, with temperatures dropping to between 70°F and 78°F / 21°C to 26°C.

I even stayed in one hostel that didn’t have air conditioning, and it was way too hot for this! So make sure you book somewhere with air con!

The humidity in April is noticeable but generally bearable, thanks to the refreshing breezes from the Caribbean Sea, particularly along the coast. These breezes also help to moderate the daytime heat.

Rainy Days VS Sunny

In Belize, April typically has around 8 to 9 hours of sunshine each day, providing excellent conditions for various outdoor activities. Tourists can explore Mayan ruins, enjoy hikes in national parks, or relax on the beautiful beaches under clear, blue skies.

Rainfall in April is scarce, with the month averaging only about 1.5 to 2.5 inches / 38 to 63 mm. When rain does occur, it tends to be brief and light, causing minimal disruption to outdoor plans.

This combination of ample sunshine and low precipitation makes April one of the best times to visit Belize, offering stable and enjoyable weather for visitors looking to experience the country’s abundant natural beauty and outdoor attractions.

We didn’t have any rain whatsoever in April during my visit to Belize. Therefore of course we spent our days appreciating the beautiful beaches and in the jungles, it was perfect!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="https://www.backpackerswanderlust.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/belize-in-april-6.webp" alt="he ancient Mayan ruins, made of limestone, stand majestically amidst a lush forest in Belize. While it is a natural occurrence and an important habitat for marine life in the open sea, it can create challenges when it is washed ashore in large quantities.

For tourists, the presence of sargassum may affect swimming, snorkeling, and other beach-related activities due to the decreased water clarity and the unpleasant smell. It can also impact local businesses that rely on beach tourism. Local authorities and communities often organize clean-up efforts to remove sargassum from affected beaches to mitigate its impact, especially in its worst months.

The extent and impact of sargassum can vary greatly from year to year and depend on ocean currents and winds. Some years have seen minimal impact in April, while others have experienced significant influxes. Monitoring local advisories and reports can provide visitors with up-to-date information on sargassum levels during their travel period.

Personally, when I visited in April there was SOME sargassum around, enough to cover the shorelines in a lot of beaches, but not enough to massively smell. Snorkeling in the ocean some will end up caught up in your hair, but that is the extent of it.

However I also traveled Belize in June and the sargassum situation was much MUCH worse, to the point the water around the islands was greeny-brown instead of crystal clear blue.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="533" height="800" src="https://www.backpackerswanderlust.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/belize-in-april-8-533x800.webp" alt="A solitary palm tree leans towards the sea on a sandy beach in Belize. This period comes after the high season, which typically runs from late November to March, when North Americans escape the cold weather. As a result, visitors in April can enjoy slightly fewer crowds at popular tourist spots compared to the peak times.

Easter Impact: It’s important to note that crowd levels can spike around Easter, which is a major holiday in Belize and attracts both international tourists and local vacationers. During Holy Week, you can expect larger crowds at major tourist destinations, resorts, and beaches. Festivals and events held during this time can also draw significant numbers of attendees.

Speaking of Easter, this is exactly when I first visited the islands of Belize, over Easter weekend. Originally I planned to be backpacking the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, however after looking at the crazy price spikes, I considered my other options, and landed on Belize where hostel prices were still normal.

Ambergris Caye was relatively uneventful, I did notice more places were closed such as restaurants and snorkeling tours, however, crowds were still pretty chill and I enjoyed my stay.

However moving onto Caye Caulker, the island with the motto “go slow” and known as backpackers paradise I received a massive shock! There were parties everywhere, with bass blasting, drunk people everywhere, and so crowded you could barely move!

Turns out Caye Caulker is THE place to be during Easter in Belize, so just a heads up. I would rework your Belize itinerary so you aren’t spending Easter weekend there.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="578" height="800" src="https://www.backpackerswanderlust.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/belize-in-april-2.webp" alt="In this lively scene, a series of hand-painted wooden signs hang from a palm tree at a beachside bar in Belize. Here are some of the wildlife you might encounter during this time:

Whale Sharks: April coincides with the peak season for whale shark sightings, especially around the Gladden Spit area. These gentle giants are often seen by divers and snorkelers.

Manatees: The coastal waters of Belize are home to the West Indian manatee, and the clearer waters during April enhance the chances of spotting these serene creatures.

Migratory Birds: April is still within the window for bird migration, and Belize’s position on migratory routes makes it a hotspot for birdwatchers. Species such as warblers, tanagers, and flycatchers can be observed.

Resident Tropical Birds: Belize is home to a wide array of tropical birds that can be seen year-round, such as the keel-billed toucan, scarlet macaw, and various species of parrots and hummingbirds.

Crocodiles: The American crocodile and Morelet’s crocodile are native to Belize’s rivers and lagoons. Safely observing these ancient reptiles can be a thrilling part of any wildlife tour.

Iguanas: The dry season is a great time to spot green iguanas and the more colorful Belizean iguanas as they sun themselves in the trees or by riverbanks.

Jaguars and Other Cats: The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is known as the first jaguar preserve in the world and is a good place to possibly spot jaguars, though they are naturally elusive.
