You can jump into the water from rope swings or tree branches, or just relax on the shore and enjoy the view.

The lagoon also has some facilities, such as toilets, change rooms, and picnic areas, so you can spend a whole day there just relaxing.

I was lucky enough to visit Vanuatu as part of a South Pacific cruise from Sydney. No doubt this was a highlight for me during my time in Port Vila.

The main attraction is the water itself, which is a stunning shade of blue that changes with the sunlight and the tide. The water is calm and clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

You can also have fun jumping off the wooden platforms, swinging from the ropes, or climbing up the trees that overhang the lagoon. The local kids are often there to show off their skills and challenge you to join them.

The Blue Lagoon is not only a great place to cool off and have fun, but also a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty and culture of Vanuatu.

You can admire the tropical plants and flowers, listen to the birds and insects, and interact with the friendly and welcoming locals who share their land with you.

You can also learn more about the history and legends of the Blue Lagoon from your guide or from the signs that are posted around the area.

No doubt this is a beautiful spot in Port Vila and a must-visit for anyone exploring the island.

chilling in a quieter spot at the blue lagoon vanuatu

a quieter part of the blue lagoon in port vila away from all the crowds on a sunny day

How To Get To The Port Vila Blue Lagoon

The Port Vila Blue Lagoon is located on the east coast of Efate, about a 35 minute drive from the capital city of Port Vila.

There are several ways to get there, depending on your preference and budget.

Hire a car: You can rent a car from one of the many car rental companies in Port Vila and drive yourself to the lagoon. The road is sealed and well-signposted, and you can enjoy the scenic views along the way. Renting a car for a day may cost you about $60,00.

Book a tour bus or driver: You can also join an organized tour that includes a stop at the lagoon, or hire a private driver who can take you there and back.

This option may be more convenient and comfortable, as you don’t have to worry about driving or parking, and you can also learn more about the local culture and history from your guide. A tour or a driver may cost you around $40.00 per person.

Take a public bus: If you want to travel like a local, you can hop on a public bus that goes to the lagoon. The bus is marked with a letter B and costs about 400 vatu / $3.50 per person.

However, be aware that the bus may not run on a regular schedule, and you may have to wait for a while before it arrives.

a moment roadside after our van broke down in port vila

locals waving out the back of a pick up truck while we were broken down on the side of the road in port vila vanuatu

Entry Fee To The Blue Lagoon

Once you arrive at the lagoon, you will need to pay an entry fee of 500 vatu / $4.00 for adults and 300 vatu / $2.50 for children.

This fee goes to the local landowners who maintain the lagoon and its facilities. It is exactly what I did when visiting Port Vila by cruise ship, and it turned out to be a great day.

Personally, I recommend booking a tour with a local operator that includes The Blue Lagoon as one of the stops. These tours will pick you up from the cruise terminal and take you to various attractions around Port Vila, including The Blue Lagoon.

You will have some time to explore the lagoon and go for a swim. These tours also include lunch and refreshments.

If this sounds like something you would be interested reach out to the following tour operators:

Vila Hope Tours

Sammy’s Port Vila Tours & Transfers

Yumi Tours & Transfers

Alternatively, for more of a private experience where you don’t have to share a car with numerous other people, you can hire a taxi to take you to The Blue Lagoon.

You can arrange for your driver to wait for you, or to come back later to pick you up.

pulling out of port at port vila on our cruise ship

a beautiful sunset with numerous yachts while departing port vila on our cruise ship

When Is The Best Time To Visit The Port Vila Blue Lagoon

So, when is the best time to visit the Port Vila Blue Lagoon? Well, that depends on what you’re looking for.

Vanuatu has a tropical climate, which means it’s warm and humid all year round. However, there are some differences between the seasons that may affect your experience at the lagoon.

If you want to avoid the heat and the crowds, you may want to visit the lagoon during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This is when the weather is cooler, less humid, and less rainy.

It’s also the low season for tourism, so you may find fewer people at the lagoon. However, the water temperature may be slightly lower, and the lagoon may not be as vibrant as in the wet season.

If you want to enjoy the warmer water and the lush vegetation, you may want to visit the lagoon during the wet season, which runs from November to April.

This is when the weather is hotter, more humid, and more rainy. It’s also when the lagoon is at its most colorful, as the rain brings out the contrast between the blue water and the green plants. However, you may also encounter more tourists, as this is the high season for tourism.

Plus, you may have to deal with tropical storms or cyclones that can occur during this period.

For more space and privacy, you may want to visit the lagoon on weekdays, when there are fewer visitors and more room to enjoy the lagoon.

Avoid visiting the lagoon on weekends or public holidays, when there may be more locals and tourists who come to relax or have fun at the lagoon.

living my best life in my water shoes at the port vila blue lagoon

What To Do At The Blue Lagoon

This natural swimming spot is one of the most popular attractions in Vanuatu and for good reasons.

Swim in the crystal-clear water

The Blue Lagoon is fed by a freshwater spring that creates a stunning contrast with the turquoise ocean. This was just a tour I had found on Facebook, and in all honesty wasn’t too sure what to expect.

Unfortunately, the day didn’t start too well as the shared van we were meant to be a part of departed without us. However, our first stop at Rarru Cascades was a success, so it was on to the next, the Blue Lagoon.

Arriving in the car park we pay our entry fee, then it is straight down to the waters. As this was a cruise day this place was no doubt the busiest spot which we visited.

With crowds covering the Blue Lagoon, we make our way into the little wooden dock and jump down into the milky blue waters.

There is a great atmosphere with music blasting and everyone in the best mood. Locals are jumping off platforms and swings into the lagoon, doing impressive flips and dives on the way down.

This was the perfect place to hangout for a couple of hours and just enjoy the refreshing water. It is an absolutely gorgeous spot, though I do recommend visiting on a day without the cruise ship in port if you have that option!

relaxing in a bit of shade at the blue lagoon port vila vanuatu

What To Pack For The Blue Lagoon In Port Vila

Packing for a trip to the Blue Lagoon in Port Vila, Vanuatu, requires consideration to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience in this stunning natural wonder

Here’s a comprehensive packing list to help you prepare for your trip:

Swimwear: The Blue Lagoon is all about swimming and enjoying crystal-clear waters, so make sure to pack your swimsuits, swim trunks, and bikinis.

Sun Protection: The South Pacific sun can be intense, so pack sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a rash guard or cover-up to protect your skin from the sun’s rays.

Footwear: Water shoes or sturdy sandals with good traction are essential for walking on uneven surfaces, as the Blue Lagoon may have rocks and slippery areas. You might also need flip-flops for when you’re not in the water.

Waterproof Bag: To keep your valuables like your phone, wallet, and camera safe from splashes or unexpected rain, consider bringing a waterproof bag or pouch.

Towels: While some tour operators may provide towels, it’s a good idea to bring your own quick-dry towel to ensure you have one readily available.

Snorkeling Gear: If you’re interested in exploring the underwater world of the Blue Lagoon, pack your own snorkel, mask, and fins. While some tour operators may provide gear, bringing your own can ensure a better fit and comfort.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen: When snorkeling or swimming, use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the delicate marine environment. Regular sunscreen can harm the coral reefs.

Insect Repellent: Depending on the time of year, mosquitoes and other insects can be active. Pack some insect repellent to avoid uncomfortable bites.

Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill and help reduce plastic waste.

Cash: While there may be some facilities that accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to have some local currency (Vanuatu vatu) for small purchases and tips.

a cheeky selfie of while swimming in the blue lagoon in port vila vanuatu

Where To Stay In Port Vila?

Whether you are looking for a luxurious resort, a cozy bungalow, or a budget-friendly hotel, you can find the perfect place to stay at Port Vila.

If you want to be close to the main attractions, shops, restaurants, and nightlife of the city, you might want to stay in the downtown area.
