However, just be aware this isn’t the case all the time.

Overall the journey via boat is around 90 to 100 kilometers.

How Long Does It Take To Get From Phuket To Koh Lanta

Whether you are traveling by speedboat or ferry will change the time it actually takes. However, in Thailand, things rarely run on time.

Therefore best to allow 3 to 4 hours for this journey. Also, these boats will usually stop in at Koh Phi Phi to drop off and pick up passengers. You may even want to spend a couple of days in this backpacker haven.

Now for our second option, by bus. Nowadays, especially in the high season, it is possible to take a direct bus or shuttle from Phuket which will be around 6 hours.

However, in the low season, you likely will need to stop in the coastal town of Krabi. This is simply because there is not enough demand.

The first part, Phuket to Krabi will take around 4 hours and cover around 160 kilometers. The second half of the journey, Krabi to Koh Lanta can be done by boat or shuttle and takes about 90 minutes.

waiting for the ferry boat to depart Koh Lanta

Phuket To Koh Lanta Ferry

The easiest and simplest way to travel to Koh Lanta is definitely by booking a ferry. This is what the majority of travelers will use.

However, because of that, you can find yourself squished in like sardines.

I also found that the quality of ferries available was a lot worse down here than what you would find in the Gulf of Thailand, for example traveling Koh Phangan to Koh Tao.

On a lot of those journeys, you’ll have a nice big metal ship with padded seats. Though here I found all the ferries I took involved wooden boats that were on the smaller side. Sure they may have been multiple stories, but this was nothing compared to what I have seen before.

I honestly found this quite strange as I felt the more luxurious travelers would be in the south, not those backpacking Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party. Maybe I just had bad luck?

Either way, you will at least have some choice when it comes to deciding on a ferry company. This is good as ferries in Thailand are known for their questionable safety standards, so you will have options.

It could be that there are not enough life jackets, or just heading out on rough seas, which is something I have experienced first hand. I highly recommend reading reviews if you are worried about this.

Ferry Companies

Depart Phuket

Arrive Koh Lanta

Lanta Petpailin

08:30

12:30

Ao Nang Travel & Tour

08:30

12:45

Chaokoh Travel Center

11:00

16:00

Lanta Petpailin

13:30

17:30

All of the above ferry companies are bookable via 12.Go Asia.

Ferry Prices And How To Book

For the 4 hour journey you will find tickets generally start around $24.00 to $30.00 which is pretty decent as the journey does take time.

Make sure to book your tickets in advance, rather than just heading to at Rassada Pier an hour before you want to go. Especially in the high season where it is pretty normal for these boats to get completely booked up days prior to departure.

When you want to book a ferry, you can do so on the 12. Go Asia. It’s the platform I always use when traveling Southeast Asia, and I can’t recommend it more!

Alternatively, you can book once arrive in Phuket at one of the travel agencies.

The majority of accommodation providers in Thailand are usually more than happy to organize ferry boats and buses for you as required so this is another option. It may cost a couple of dollars more since there will be a commission.

at the ferry wharf in koh lanta

Phuket To Koh Lanta Speed Boat

The bonus of taking a speed boat is that it is a quicker option, but it will be a tiny bit more expensive than the ferry.

Most backpackers will decide to book a ferry rather than a speedboat. This is simply because they aren’t worried about a fast journey and would rather save a bit of baht.

Reputable speedboat companies include Bundhaya (my preferred), Tigerline Travel, and Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club. The boats are pretty comfortable with padded seats, though if it’s a rough day on the water you may find yourself being thrown around a bit.

If you are in a hurry or only have a limited time in Thailand then booking the speedboat would be a great idea.

This can be done in advance and from home on 12.Go Asia, or you can book once you are in Phuket by visiting one of the many travel agencies around.

Speed Boat Companies

Depart Phuket

Arrive Koh Lanta

Bundhaya Speed Boat

08:30

10:00

Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club

08:30

10:00

Tigerline Travel

09:00

12:30

Bundhaya Speed Boat

10:00

11:30

Tigerline Travel

11:00

13:00

Bundhaya Speed Boat

12:00

13:30

Satun Pakbara Speed Boat Club

12:30

14:00

speed boat driving past in koh lanta

Taking A Bus To Koh Lanta

If you get seasick then you may prefer to take a bus or minivan.

During the high season is the only time you will be able to do this route directly on a minivan.

This is done through Good Luck Lanta Tour which operates twice a day at 11 am and 12 pm. This will take around 4 hours and cost around $12.80 / 400 THB for a minivan transfer.

If you are looking to go cheaper again you can take a local bus from Phuket Bus Terminal 2 to Krabi for just $6.40 / 200 THB.

Stopping off in Krabi for a couple of days is the perfect way to break up the journey. Head to the nearby town of Ao Nang and relax beachside. You can also check out the famous Railay Beach on a day trip.

Once your time in Krabi has come to an end, you can head to Koh Lanta.

You can get a transfer from Krabi Wharf to Koh Lanta or a minivan transfer to Hua Hin Pier and then a short ferry ride to Koh Lanta. Be aware the ferry between Krabi and Koh Lanta does not operate between June to October, so you will need to get the minivan transfer to Hua Hin.

The distance between these two is so small, that the ferry journey only takes around 20 minutes. Much quicker than the direct ferry from Phuket which can take 4 hours.

the van ferry from hua hin pier arriving in koh lanta

🚗 How I Book Cheap Transport In Thailand: 12Go Asia 🚗

Getting From Koh Lanta Pier To Your Accommodation

Depending on where you decide to stay in Koh Lanta will affect how to get from the pier you arrive at to your accommodation.

If you are staying in the town then it should be a relatively easy walk to your accommodation. Though the majority of travelers stay quite spread out over the Western coastline.

You can either organize your transfer directly with your accommodation provider. Though it is super easy to just get off the ferry boat and find a ride. This is what I and plenty of other travelers did.

Typically you will be put into the back of a pickup truck or ute with the baggage surrounding you. Squeezed up the driver will begin to navigate the island, dropping each person off at their desired location.

Generally, the drivers charged a fixed price of $4.80 / 150 THB. However, be aware if you are staying quite a distance away (over 20 minutes) then I would expect to pay a higher price than this.

the typical ute you’ll be chucked in the back of to transfer to your accommodation from the wharf

The Ultimate Things To Do While In Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a super chill and relaxed island. There’s nothing better than just exploring somewhere at a more laid-back pace, and Koh Lanta has a lot to explore.

This place is truly a nature lover paradise so let’s get into what is the best things to see and do in Koh Lanta:

Lanta Animal Welfare

This is a great place to visit if you have been traveling for a while, and are craving a taste of home with sweet animals. For sure, there’s no better cure for homesickness other than a bit of cat and puppy love!

Lanta Animal Welfare has the goal of helping the dogs and cats that live here in Koh Lanta. They do this by providing vet services, desexing, and providing new homes.

While you are here you can take a tour of the building and meet all the friendly residents. Many of these cats and dogs will actually move to different countries as travelers fall in love with them.

After the tour, I recommend taking one of the dogs for a walk. You will be given a leash and a map of a set path to follow. After visiting make sure you donate to help keep Lanta Animal Welfare up and running.

Mu Koh Lanta National Park

Mu Ko Lanta National Park is one of the most incredible spots on this island. Prepare yourself for some epic cliff views and steep hills.

The drive here is absolutely amazing and the roads aren’t in half bad condition as well. The entry fee is $6.40 / 200 THB, but in my opinion, it is worth it.

The beach on the left side of the lighthouse is beautifully sandy and the perfect spot for a dip, on the right-hand sand it is covered in large stones. Hike up to the lighthouse for some amazing views over the ocean.

After you’ve done a bit of exploration you should also be able to wander into the jungle and find some monkeys hanging out in the trees.

view from the cliffs at mu koh lanta national park

🚗 How I Book Cheap Transport In Thailand: 12Go Asia 🚗

Koh Lanta Old Town

This place looks like it has just stopped in time. It’s a far cry from the modern concrete buildings in the main area.

Park the motorbike up and go for a walk. Though no biggie if you are scared of the dark you do have to hire a guide so you won’t be alone.

Southeast Asia actually has some pretty impressive cave networks worth exploring (if you’re heading to Laos I highly recommend Kong Lor Cave).

The tour of Khao Mai Kaew Cave takes 2 and a half hours. During this experience, you will find yourself squished between rocks and exploring the various caverns.

The entry fee to enter is $9.60 / 300 THB. Included in this fee is a headlamp so you don’t need to worry about a torch. Just make sure to wear covered shoes with a good grip underneath.

Day Trip To Koh Rok And Koh Haa

Another great choice is to do a day trip from Koh Lanta to Koh Rok and Koh Haa for a spot of snorkeling.

I did this recently when I was in Thailand and was absolutely amazed by the marine life and colorful corals. They close these islands for 6 months of the year giving everything a good chance to recover after a busy tourist season.

I actually booked this tour with Get Your Guide, and no doubt it was the highlight of my time in Koh Lanta. It was pretty packed, but it was lovely snorkeling, got to see monitor lizards at our lunch spot of Koh Rok, and enjoyed relaxing in the sunshine.

Check Out The Viewpoints

Viewpoint Hill: This is the incredible viewpoint on the very top of the island. You should be able to pull into one of the restaurants located here and grab a meal or a drink. The views on the east side of the island are just as beautiful, maybe even better than the west side!

Keep Hydrated: No, I am not talking about how hot it is. One of the best things we did was just stop in at any and every restaurant that had an amazing view and grab a drink. After about 25 minutes, you will be able to spot the waterfall.

Just note that if you visit during the dry season the waterfall won’t have much water flowing. It is a lot more impressive in the wet season. Regardless of what time of year, make sure you have decent shoes as the path can get pretty muddy.

Best Accommodation Options In Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is actually quite a large island with plenty of little townships dotted around. The majority of accommodation is along the West Coast where you can relax and watch the sunset from the beach.

I stayed at Pitt Bungalows which is great for backpackers who can enjoy things on the more basic side. One core memory of Koh Lanta is one night it poured and our little bamboo bungalow became a hideout for numerous frogs. However, do note they close down over the low season.

Koh Lanta also has plenty of nice fancy beachside resorts if that is what you are looking for.

On my most recent trip with my mother, I couldn’t do the usual budget option to decided to splash out for a stay at Treeya Lanta. They had the best pool area I came across in Thailand and just a minute from the beach. It is more pricey starting at $50.00 per night, but it’s great value for money.

there is also Mook Koh Lanta which is next door and a lot more affordable, however, there is no air conditioning.

Aha Lanta Cozy Hostel

A great hostel with plenty of common spaces to meet other travelers.
